Compare Instagram followers vs following

Last updated: 2026-04-13

This page explains a practical and privacy-conscious workflow for comparing two Instagram-related lists such as followers and following exports.

What you can get from this workflow

  • Find non-mutual accounts fast (who you follow but who does not follow you back).
  • Review followers/following quality using local comparison, without third-party account login.
  • Export a clean review list for manual decisions instead of risky automation.

Important scope note

ListDiff does not connect to Instagram accounts and does not fetch data automatically. It compares only the lists you paste or import into the tool.

Recommended mapping

  • Put Following into List A.
  • Put Followers into List B.
  • A only means accounts you follow who do not follow back.
  • B only means accounts that follow you but you do not follow back.

How to export Instagram data (official-style path)

  1. Open Instagram settings and go to Accounts Center.
  2. Find Your information and permissions then choose Download your information.
  3. Select Download or transfer information, then choose Some of your information.
  4. Select Followers and following only to keep export focused and smaller.
  5. Request export and wait for archive generation (timing varies by account size).

Instagram UI labels may change by app version and region. If wording differs, look for equivalent “download your data” options in Accounts Center.

From export file to compare-ready lists

  1. Unzip the export package locally.
  2. Open the followers/following files (usually JSON in a connections folder).
  3. Extract only usernames into two plain lists, one item per line.
  4. Normalize usernames consistently (for example, remove optional leading @).

Run comparison in ListDiff

  1. Open the home tool.
  2. Put Following usernames in List A and Followers usernames in List B.
  3. Enable Trim and Ignore empty to reduce format noise.
  4. Run compare and inspect A only, B only, and Intersection.
  5. Export A only as CSV if you need a cleanup action list.

Common pitfalls and fixes

  • Different username casing can reduce intersection if case-sensitive is ON. Keep it OFF for most username workflows.
  • Leading @ symbols or extra spaces should be normalized consistently on both sides.
  • Duplicate rows from export processing can distort interpretation; check duplicates tabs before action.
  • Do not mix display names with usernames. Compare stable handles only.

Security and compliance reminders

  • Prefer official export paths over unknown third-party scraping tools.
  • Do not share account credentials with any compare tool.
  • Review platform terms and local regulations before large-scale automated actions.
